In the Czech Republic we usually refer to the New Years Eve as “Silvestr” because December 31 is a name day of Silvester.

Z hospody jsme byli vyhozeni kolem čtvrté ráno. We were thrown out of the pub around fourth in the morning.
Champagne is not good to combine with other types of alcohol. Šampaňské není dobré kombinovat s jinými druhy alkoholu.

“Silvestr” December 31
New Year’s Eve is in the Czech Republic celebrated mostly in the same way as in the rest of the world.
The course of the whole celebration can be different for everybody – someone spends it at home watching TV with family, others might go out with friends.
Popular refreshments are sandwiches (“chlebíčky”), canapés (“jednohubky”) or salty baked goods (like chips). At midnight people drink champagne.
Many people meet in city or village squares at midnight where they wish each other a good luck and health in the New Year. Afterwards they look at the fireworks.
Czech traditional finger sandwiches CHLEBÍČKY – usually quick food for guests or on a New Year Eve munchie while you are waiting for midnight toast with friends and family:
You slice French or Italian banquettes put light coating of mayo or butter on one side and arrange ham, salami etc on top. Then garnish with slice of cheese, pickle, roast red bell peppers and egg!

The Rudolfinum is a music auditorium in Prague, Czech Republic, home of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra since 1946.The building was designed in the neo-renaissance style by architect Josef Zítek and his student Josef Schulz, and was opened 8 February 1885. It is named in honour of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, who presided over the opening. The Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall is one of the oldest concert halls in Europe and is noted for its excellent acoustics. On 4 January 1896 Antonín Dvořák himself conducted the Czech Philharmonic in the hall in its first ever concert. The building also contains the Galerie Rudolfinum, an art gallery that focuses mainly on contemporary art. (x)

– a good-night story with illustrations from the popular Czech artist Josef Lada that is excellently narrated by Jiřina Bohdalová. The clever fox learns how to order ham over the phone. However, she feels guilty at the end that she has actually stolen the ham and that she has to make up for it to the butcher.
